Story

Fire Shankar (Vikram) works as a fighter in the film industry and his dream is to become a big villain. He is assisted by his group of fighters.

One day, he comes across an old man Dakshinamurthy (K Vishwanath) who is being chased by goons. The reason for that is Dakshinamurthy’s property which has an orphanage. The noted minister Ranganayaki alias Akka (Sana) has got her eyes on the property and she lures Dakshinamoorthy’s son (Avinash) to get that. Shankar gives shelter to Dakshinamurthy and protects him.

However, Akka is searching frantically for Dakshinamurthy and Shankar decides to put an end to all this. How that happens forms the rest of the story.

Artists Performance:

Vikram has come up with a versatile performance. He is seen nearly in twenty getups and all of them sit on him very well. He is a gifted actor and should fall in the hands of the right directors.

Deeksha Seth was there to fill the romance track and provide the required glamour. Though she has not indulged in any skin show, she has an elegant charm which cannot be missed.

K Vishwanath was wonderful. Despite his age and physical condition, he gives an energetic performance and his act in the first half is really commendable.

Sana comes as a surprise revelation. She has a meaty role as the lead villain and performs it in the right manner. Despite all her negative shades, her sensuousness is something of a treat to the audience.

Pradeep Rawath was brief but good. Thambi Ramaiah was upto the mark. Aruldoss brought few smiles. Avinash was apt. Saloni appeals with her item song. The song involving Shriya and Reemma Sen was below average. Others didn’t have much to offer.

Highlights:

* Vikram and K Vishwanath’s performances
* Background score
* Fight sequence between Vikram and Pradeep Rawath
* Second half

Drawbacks:

* Weak screenplay
* Predictable storyline
* Low emotional voltage
* First half
* Songs

Final Analysis:

Whenever a film starring Vikram comes, the expectations are high. Given his versatility and immense talent he possesses, the audience wants to see variety and larger than life concepts from him. So when he comes across as a regular mass hero, the attempt doesn’t really work. That’s what happened here.

Moreover, it was the ineffective handling of the script which could not get the audience to connect to the plot. As usual, there was the nativity factor missing.

The film suffered in the comedy and romance department as well.

Overall, it was made on a formula with no innovation. At the box office, this might appeal to the frontbenchers who seek few fights, some punch lines etc. but success is highly doubtful.

Story

Chakri (Shyam) who hails from a royal family works with a TV channel and he falls in love with the Marwadi girl Sohini (Priyamani). Both families agree for the marriage and Chakri’s father (Aditya Menon) takes the newly wed couple to the grave of his brother Veera Narasimha Rayalu (Jagapathi Babu) and Naga Penchalamma (Priyamani again) for paying respects.

However, the spirit of Penchalamma enters the body of Sohini and she kills Chakri’s father. A tryst with a guru reveals the flashback of Narasimha Rayalu and Penchalamma, their efforts to lay the idol of Narasimha Swamy in a temple for the welfare of the villages and the enemies (Kota and others) who are stopping it. Whether the divine mission is successful or not forms the rest of the story.

Artists Performance:

Jagapathi Babu looks fit and does his bit in the required manner. Though some of his dialogues looked odd, he managed to bring some attention of the audience to the screen.

Priyamani should work on her looks. Her body is slowly going out of shape and something is not right around her tummy and navel area where the extra flab has come. Performance-wise no complaints…

Shyam is handsome and despite his Kollywood background, he tries his best to get the lip sync. Though his role is subdued, he gives his full in every scene. He is a talent who should be given right roles.

Aditya Menon is a good performer. He has the right kind of personality and the evil expressions to make him the villain. He has strong potential to enter into the top league of villains if he chooses his projects carefully.

Tanikella Bharani was effective, Kota was impressive, Brahmi was boring, Rajeev Kanakala was wasted, Jackie was okay, Hema and Surekha Vani were brief, Siva Parvathi was standard, Brahmaji came and went, the others didn’t have much scope.

Highlights:

* Jagapathi Babu & Priyamani

Drawbacks:

* Outdated direction
* Terrible music for songs and BG score
* Poor cinematography
* Abrupt editing
* No depth in any scene
* Dragged pace

Final Analysis:

Within first five minutes of the film, one begins to get a feeling that they are being made a ‘Bakra’ and by the time the film is halfway, the ‘Bakra’ is ready for ‘Bali’.

The thought from the director is good but there is not a single point where he can be patted for his execution. It was amazingly amateur. Sometimes, the film looked like ‘Chandramukhi’ and sometimes, it looked like ‘Arundhati’. And one doesn’t know why Rajeev Kanakala was there, an actor of his calibre became a simple dummy. Here are some highlight comments heard inside the theatre

* When Jagapathi Babu is given a extra long sword for doing ‘Daiva Kaaryam’, the theatre folks commented that it will be used by him for slicing lemons and breaking coconuts in temple

* Nearly 70% of the scenes contain Jaggu carrying the sword. It looked more like a kid carrying his fancy toy wherever he goes with a lot of excitement.

* Priyamani as a royal Naga Penchalamma dreams of a song sequence wherein her eroticism and raunchiness is displayed. The attempt was to appease the mass audience but it was a misfit.

Overall, this is a film which has no content, no proper handling of the script and there is nothing notable that any class of audience can connect to. At the box office, the chances of the film scoring a flop are very high.

Review

Story

The movie is set on 1948 Nelakondapalli village in Adilabad district. Lakshmamma (Sneha) is the mother of an infant girl child Mallamma (Baby Annie) who leaves her into a river like Kunti did to Karna for the fear of Razakars chasing to kill. Lakshmamma gets killed. Mallamma is rescued by Sambayya, a village man who nurtures her like his grand daughter like Kanva did for Shakunthala.

Sambayya knows that Mallamma is the daughter of Lakshmamma and Rajanna(Nagarjuna) a great freedomn fighter against British and also the rescuer of them from unscrupulous doras of gadis.

The girl Mallamma is good at singing since childhood. But dorasani (Sweta Menon) hates that. She orders her not to sing and punishes severely. Then the girl goes to Delhi to complaint to PM Nehru. What happens from then has to be watched on screen.

Artists Performance:

Nagarjuna is at his best. He deserves commendations for doing such inspiring role. He looked strong with toned up muscles. He is physically inspiring.

Sneha is homely and looked sensuous in a song.

Annie is the highlight. She deserves awards for sure.

Alapati Lakshmi and Telangana Shakuntala appeared in notable but short roles. Ajay, Pradeep Rawat and Supreet are also guests with reasonable roles. Model Sreedhar excelled surprisingly and even Sweta Menon is at her best. Ravi Kale who is widely seen in Bollywood films appeared in a local dora's role.

Music score top points.

Highlights:

* Nagarjuna
* Annie
* Music
* Story
* Screenplay

Drawbacks:

* Commercial elements like heroine and glamour

Final Analysis:

The film takes us back into the Razakars’ era. Hearts melt and eyes spill tears, while we watch the first half. One has to appreciate the efforts put in by Rajamouli and his team in pumping in emotion in key sequences. Yes, the film might been directed by Vijayendra Prasad, father of Rajamouli, but the ace director’s deft handling of the project was clearly evident. Especially, the action sequences, the tyranny of feudal lords in Gadis and the atrocities perpetrated by the cronies of Nizam on the people of Telangana ignite the spirit of patriotism among the audience.

It is definitely a notable film in the career of Nagarjuna. Yes, after Annamayya and Sri Ramadasu, this is one film that he can boast of as yet another precious jewel in his crown.

Annie deserves a great commendation and there are many chances for her to score brownie points by the juries of several award committees. She portrayed the role up to the perfection beyond her age.

Except a few liberties taken by the director that are hard to be digested by the sane audience, rest of the film is a must watch for an experience and to know the cruel incidents happened on the land of Telugus a few decades ago.

The first half is shouldered by little girl Annie in the role of Mallamma and Nagarjuna enters the screen just a few moments before interval. His entry scene – with British chaining the hero like they had done for Katta Bommanna – might create a feeling of hackneyed screenplay, but as the story runs, his character gets elevated. He seldom fights but instigates people to fight against tyranny. That’s awesome. This is the character inspired from Suddala Hanumanthu who used to evoke fighting spirit among the people with his songs.

The film has enough material for the Telugu people to experience the history. As a matter of fact, the film hasn’t shown too much of the atrocities committed by the Razakars on native people but, it just shows the glimpses of them, like a few shocking scenes such as weighing the breasts of women with money. Kudos to the censor board for allowing such bold scenes on screen with due respect to history.

To sum up, the film deserves patronage from audience for its content rich songs, emotional RR and bold depiction of history.

Story

A tale of two couples, the story begins with Gautham (Sharwa), a random guy who is approached by Amrutha (Ananya) for a help. She comes from a small town to Hyderabad and has to go for an interview. She takes the help of Gautham for getting to the location but has several innocent suspicions on him. By the time the interview is over Amrutha starts liking Gautham but she doesn’t even know his name or anything. On the other hand, there is Krishnakanth (Jai), a shy guy who is in love with nurse Madhumita (Anjali). Unlike his nature, Madhumita is more tough, outgoing and assertive. However, she also likes Krishnakanth and eventually they start going around.

Krishnakanth decides to take Madhumita to his hometown and takes the Hyderabad- Vijayawada bus. At the same time, Amrutha who is unable to forget Gautham takes a bus going from Vijayawada – Hyderabad in the hope of seeing him again. What Amrutha doesn’t know is Gautham takes the same bus as Krishna-Madhumita to get in touch with Amrutha. The story takes a turn when both the buses meet with an accident. What happens after that forms the rest of the story.

Artists Performance:

Sharwanand is a class actor. Despite being given a regular character, he essays it with apt conviction and possesses a strong screen presence. He must be seen more on screen.

Ananya comes up with a cute performance. She is not much of a pretty girl but has that typical innocent looks and carries her role with good quality. Overall, she did a decent job.

Jai has got into his role very nicely and his body language and face in the crowd appearance will strike a chord with the viewers. He underplays his character to the right level.

Anjali is the showstealer. She has a strong homely sex appeal and good versatility in her expressions. Most of the times, it is her eyes that do the talking and her dubbing was suitable.

Highlights:

* Screenplay
* Canning of the bus collision
* Music and RR
* Performances from lead cast
* Storyline
* Sharwa’s dialogue about Hyderabad

Drawbacks:

* Lengthy climax
* Harsh dose of reality
* Nativity element missing to an extent

Final Analysis:

Whenever a Tamil film comes to Telugu in dubbed format, the difference is quite visible.

For starters, the Tamil films are filled with more of daily life characters, their protagonists are regular faces in the crowd sans glamour, the depiction of each scene is done with strong narrative and realism. This is the feel which comes to the viewer from the moment the film starts.

However, it is not just about the nativity or the romance between the lead pairs, it is the underlying realities of life and the backdrop of the film that many will connect to.

Though the subject is simple, the director has elevated the emotion to a high extent purely by his screenplay and extracting good performances. The film also gives a message on how life can take a turn at any point and why one must share love with his/her dear one.

Overall, the film has been made with good sensibilities, a practical touch and above all, cost effective budget.

On the flip side, the Telugu audience is not used to such realistic treats so it remains to be seen how they can handle this.

At the box office, the film has all prospects of scoring a commercial hit and if the audience also connects, then the chances of success grow stronger.

Review

Story

Jai (Pawan Kalyan) is a yesman to a gangster Bhagawan (Jackie Shroff). Independently Jai runs a nursery where he gets close to Sandhya (Sarah). Chotu (Ali) is his subordinate at the nursery. Bhagawan will have a rival gangster Kulkarni (Atul Kulkarni).

The problem arrives in the form of Munna ( Sesh), the son of Bhagawan. Munna is hyper sensitive and eccentric in emotions. He kills people without any calculation. In the process Munna kills Janvi (Anjali), who admires Jai. Jai, despite a promise to Bhagwan, kills Munna. Thus the battle starts between Jai and Bhagawan. Rest should be watched on screen.

Artists Performance:

Pawan Kalyan under played when compared to his previous films. Although he looked stylish, weak story line and narration failed to extract his power.

Anjali Lavania is hot and sexy but not a face to be remembered for Telugu audience’s sensibilities.

Sarah is just ok and her costumes are bad.

Jackie Shroff is going senile with carry bags under his eyes, but is adequate for the role assigned.

Tanikella Bharani got a lengthier role this time and that's notable. Subbaraju is up to the role and Brahmanandam was not utilized properly.

The main performer who deserves good commendations is Sesh who earlier came with the film Karma. He portrayed the sadistic hypersensitive role with full conviction.

Atul Kulkarni and Sampath are very talented artistes but not exploited properly.

Ali's presence couldn't add any value for the film or for himself.

Music and background score lacked intensity. Cinematography is good while story, screenplay and direction are far from the receptive levels of targeted audience.

Highlights:
* Pawan Kalyan

Drawbacks:
* Story
* Screenplay
* Direction
* Music
* Background Score
* Dialogues

Final Analysis:

The main drop down in the film is Pawan's character design. His getup and being a yesman to a gangster aren't in kilter with his nursery business.

The major conflict point is missing in the film and the director failed to narrate convincingly.

The heroines are big minus and not at all in gel with the sensibilities of native audience. The pace of the film also goes slow and background score spoiled it further. Humor quotient is very weak in the film and it is hard to get a single smile through out for an average audience. Ali was given a wrong and weakly conceived role and hence he got wasted. Brahmanandam’s Paparayudu comedy is also not up to the mark.

The under play and serious characterization of Pawan goes funny in second half to an extent of Brahmanandam hitting on his butt with lathie. Audience fail to get connect to what the director is struggling to show.

First half is morose and second half is emotion overdose. On a whole, Panjaa hits badly on the expectations of audience.

There were no complete full songs in the movie except two. Rest of all was bit numbers. This has completely gone away from the taste of Telugu audience.

The surprising factor is that the most popular 'Panjaa......Panjaa' title song was placed at the end titles. This is one of the big blunders that the makers did. Audience have been waiting for that song and pissed off watching that at the end!!!

This film can be watched by aspiring film makers if they seriously want to know what mistakes the director shouldn’t make. There is poor chance for this film to see colors at box office.

Story

Karthik (Varun) is a happy go lucky guy who believes in strong friendships but not in love. He feels that love will hinder freedom and there are more difficulties in independence than enjoyment.

On the other hand, there is Madhulatha (Preetika) who has a strong belief in love and her parents also stand as example for successful love marriage. A sequence of events brings Madhu close to Karthik and she falls in love with him. In an unexpected twist, families of Karthik and Madhu meet and their fathers (Nasser, Kasi Viswanath) turn out to be friends. Knowing Madhu’s intentions, her father proposes alliance and Karthik is caught in a situation where he says yes. However, he decides to get out of it and catches Vara Prasad (Ranadheer) a sincere lover of Madhu. Karthik starts training Prasad to woo Madhu and what happens from there forms the rest of the story.

Artists Performance:

Varun Sandesh has given his sincere attempt to deliver his performance but he seems to have got stuck in particular pattern. It is about time he also focuses on putting some weight.

Preetika Rao is okay. Performance wise, she was confident but looks wise she has flat features which will go against her. Focusing on building the glamour quotient will help her for future.

Ranadheer has given a convincing performance. Though his role is underplayed, he manages to make his presence felt.

Swetha Basu came and went, Nasser was natural, Kasi Viswanath was standard, Kota was regular, Vennela Kishore & Ali brought few smiles. Surekha Vani, Pragathi, Vijay Sai and others did their bit as required.

Highlights:

* First half
* Technical values

Drawbacks:

* Conceptual blunder
* Over idealistic characterisation of heroine, that doesn’t happen in real life
* Boring anti climax
* Weak comedy
* Poor songs
* Overdose of melodrama in second half

Final Analysis:

Varun Sandesh started off well in his career but down the line he has not been picking the right roles to prove his versatility. Yet again, he tries to be the blue eyed lover boy with no hard feelings but then such things should not cross reason and sensibility.

Of course, this could be the director’s fault but it is also Varun’s fault for having chosen such a role.

The plot lacked conviction and since it has defied logic and practicality, the graph keeps going down as the film progresses. The final nail in the head is hit due to the over elongated climax.

Overall, the take off for the film is on an incorrect track so not much can be expected from it. At the box office, the film would need aggressive publicity to push the film among the youth since they are the only hope for this film.

Story

Artists Performance:

Vidya is a girl who follows her dreams and her dream is to become an actress. For that, she is willing to defy any norm. She also has a favourite in the form of superstar Naseeruddin Shah. After the initial weeks of struggle, she finally manages a small dance stint for a song. This falls in the eye of the noted producer Rajesh and he christens her as Silk. In no time, Silk also gets a chance to work with her favorite super star and she also becomes his bed partner for more opportunities and growth. During her journey, she comes across the innocent Tusshar, the talented director Emraan who hates her to the core.

However, what starts as a journey of dreams, success, entertainment and stardom for Silk soon reveals another side to it. What happens in between forms the rest of the story.

Technical Departments:

Vidya Balan is outstanding. Right from the rustic girl to a sex bomb to a woman who loses it all, she has shown her versatility to the fullest and carries the film exceedingly well.

Naseeruddin Shah must be saluted. Despite his real life stardom and iconic status, he simply mixed into the script and gave space. His performance was simply superb.

Emraan Hashmi is not a star just like that. There is an uncanny magic about him that makes the audience glued to the screen when he is there. He was good in his role.

Tusshar Kapoor was effective and he does full justice to his bit. Rajesh Sharma was excellent, Anju Mahendroo was apt, Imran Hasnee was neat, Mangal Kenkre was moderate. The others did their bit as required and added value.

Highlights:

* Vidya Balan & Naseeruddin Shah’s performances
* Dialogues
* Cinematography
* Screenplay
* Background score and two songs

Drawbacks:

* Slight drag during second half
* Low emotional voltage in few scenes

Final Analysis:

Though it is a Hindi film, the fact that it has been strongly inspired from the life of Silk Smitha makes it an exciting product for the south audience. The dubbed version’s release is a good convenience. The director ensured that the film flows with smooth precision and no controversies can be raised. The real life for the film comes from the dialogues.

Equally good are few scenes where the peaks are at their best. Of course, with the kind of talented cast the director has got, this was expected. The scenes to look out for are

When Vidya Balan receives an award and addresses the crowds with her thank you speech
When Emraan Hashmi talks to Vidya about his feelings and how they relate to her
When Naseeruddin Shah’s wife walks in while he is making love to Vidya

Overall, this is a film which has a strong dose of reality and a message to the many aspiring girls who are obsessed with stardom. In real life, Silk Smitha stood as an example for glory and the other side of it. This is delivered in the right package through the film. Given the budget involved and the content, there is no doubt that the film will become a commercial hit.

Review

Story

Based on the backdrop of Vijayawada, the story begins with Kalidas (Prabhu) a powerful goon who is a do-gooder to society. His loyal and trusted aide is Vijay Krishna (Mukul Dev). But Vijay’s presence gives insecurity to the power hungry and crooked Shankar Prasad (Abhimanyu), brother of Kalidas. However, Kalidas is killed one day and Shankar takes over. He spreads the word that the murder was done by Vijay Krishna. Meanwhile, Vijay’s youngest brother Siva (Chaitu) is a student leader who is a good student and also in love with Geetanjali (Amala), the police commissioner’s daughter. The story takes a turn when Vijay Krishna is murdered and Siva decides to get into action to put an end to Shankar. Whether he is successful or not forms the rest of the story.

Artists Performance:

Naga Chaitanya prepared well for the role and put a good effort in emoting the anger and intensity. While his screen presence was not that strong in the film, he covered it with positive body language.

Amala Paul was dazzlingly beautiful. She has the right kind of natural attraction and sex appeal that mesmerises the audience. Most of the magic is cast by her through the eyes.

Abhimanyu Singh was apt for the role. He shined in few scenes and showed that menacing looks. However, his character was not etched strongly to show him as a worthy villain.

Mukul Dev got a meaty role and he did justice to it. Though the lip sync was missing due to his Hindi rendition, Mukul utilised the opportunity rightly and scored.

Prabhu was brief but made his presence felt. Subhalekha Sudhakar was standard. Ashok Rao was apt. Ajay was good. Kota was effective. Ahuti Prasad was usual. The comedy track between Brahmi and M S Narayana was not required. Phanikanth who stands as Chaitu’s bodyguard was impressive with his looks. The others did their bit as required and added value.

Highlights:

* Violence scenes
* Amala Paul

Drawbacks:

* Screenplay
* Direction
* Second half
* Weak emotional graph

Final Analysis:

Since the theme of the film is goondaism in Vijayawada, it is natural that audiences expect the film to depict the contemporary political history of Vijayawada and the real-life instances that had happened in Vijayawada in the past. There is no mention of these incidents in the film.

A few scenes might give the impression that Naga Chaitanya brothers could be Devineni brothers; and it that were to be true, Abhimanyu Singh character must be that of Ranga. If that is what the director’s idea is, then he must have either no knowledge of the political history of Vijayawada or he might have deliberately distorted it.

In any case, it is better not to compare the theme of the film with the history of Vijayawada. Otherwise, the audiences are bound to get irritated.

Setting aside the background of the film, if one were to consider only the content part of the film, “Bezawada” is a third grade action film.

Except bloodshed and violence to attract the mass audience, there is absolutely no emotion in the film. The audiences do not react even if the lead roles in the film are killed. At times, one would get an impression that one was watching a street play. All the scenes that lead to the death of Prabhu are just artificial. Though the film attains a little seriousness later, the director clearly fumbled in maintaining the tempo. Had he taken the real-life incidents to build the screen play, he would have had a smooth show. But, the moment he thought of making a film based on a revenge drama according to his whims and fancies without any connection with the real life incidents, he had lost the grip over the screen play.

The audiences could not get involved anywhere in the film as they could easily predict what is going to come in the next scene.

When the rowdies proclaim that Bezawada belongs to them and declare that: “Beware, it is our Bezawada,” one wonders whether it is also a sentimental film: people may think there is something called Bezawada sentiment, too, just like sister sentiment and mother sentiment in the films. While the first half goes on without elevating the hero character, the director is totally confused in the second half as to how to elevate the hero as a hero.

There are several scenes that were forcibly incorporated and when there was no idea how to take the story forward, the director introduces song and dance sequences. For example, nobody knows why Naga Chaitanya walks out of the house and why he comes back. And he does not resort to any attacks or fights that cause harm to his family during this interregnum period. And when he fires at the shoulder of the villain, the film ends there. All that the hero does after the scene to scare the villain will only create boredom to the audience.

In any revenge drama, audiences should not disconnect themselves with the movie till the hero achieves what he wants. But if the hero continues to struggle with his character, the audiences simply walk out of the theatre without showing even minimum mercy towards the character. That itself shows that the director could not effectively convey to the audience what he wants.

Since Bezawada is a low-budget film, the producer may recover the expenditure incurred on it; but it is doubtful whether it would get any appreciation from the audience. May be a section of audiences who enjoy bloodshed and violence might enjoy watching it.

Set on the backdrop of Vizag, the story begins with Gautam (Rohit) an orphan whose sole aim in life is to marry a girl in a joint family as he longs for those relations and bonding. He finds a suitable person in the form of Vaishnavi (Nisha) who hails from a large family.

Gautam tries wooing Vaishnavi and after few incidents of yes and no, their love blooms. However, Vaishnavi is very closely attached to her father Naidu (Prakash Raj) and he wants to give his daughter to a man who knows the value of family and has a large family.

In no time, the matter gets revealed and Naidu makes his stand clear to Gautam. The tale takes a turn when Gautam is asked to attend the wedding of Vaishnavi due to a condition. What is that condition? What happens to Gautam’s love story? Will he remain Solo again? All this forms the rest of the story.

Artists Performance:

Nara Rohit is handsome and has intense eyes with assertive voice. He needs to loosen his body a bit and show expressions on his face and come out of the stiff posture. But still, he covered his drawbacks with good confidence and dialogue delivery. On a whole he suits for roles like tough cop and action oriented performances than a sentimental lover boy.

Nisha Agarwal looks cute and conveys most of her thoughts through her eyes. Acting wise, she must work on performance during emotional scenes. She has potential.

Prakash Raj is impressive as usual. No doubt he is called the powerhouse actor. His versatility and strong screen presence adds value to the film.

A special mention goes to Srinivasa Reddy. He got the big responsibility of leading the comedy track and he did full justice to that. His role was lengthy and the opportunity was utilised properly. He deserves to be given more encouragement and roles.

Sayaji Shinde was standard, Jayasudha was natural, Ravu Ramesh was not used to his potential, the girl who did Nisha’s friend’s role scored few points, M S Narayana brought few smiles, Ali was witty. Pavitra Lokesh looks graceful. Good to see Mumaith Khan back and that too in shape. The others did their bit as required.

Highlights:

* Emotional intensity
* Dialogues
* Background score and three songs
* Screenplay
* Technical values

Drawbacks:

* Slight jerks in editing and RR

Final Analysis:

The concept of joint families sounded ideal and possible during the olden days. We were not in a global economy then and families relied on agriculture or family professions. However, times have changed and life’s demands have made it practically impossible for dreaming of a joint family in today’s times. But there are rare practices like ‘Tharaveedu’ among joint family lovers. Many families in Kerala still keep the tradition of joint family alive by spending their annual vacation in Tharaveedu (ancestral home) where all members come together. But in majority cases, the joint families have lost importance as people turned more practical. And this applies to all social classes.

While looking at the film, this is the approach audience will have. But then, more than the concept, it is the content which surpasses all. It is supported by strong emotional graph and the stress on values of family and relationships is what scores the brownie points.

Secondly, it is the dialogues which are written with sensibility and maturity.

Few classic examples are:

“manchi mogudu dorikite gudilo devunni kooda marchipothaaru aada vaallu”
“Poyatappudu naluguru lekapothe thappu naadhi avutundhi kaani puttinappudu naluguru lekapovadam naa thappu ela avutundhi”

Overall, this is a film that will strike a chord with the family audience and emotionally driven mass audience. There are no idle moments and the film works as a perfect package of comedy, emotion and sentiment. At the box office, considering the budget and other factors, the film has it all to score success.

Story

Seeta becomes pregnant and she wants to deliver baby in Ayodhya itself. Just about when everything was happy in Ayodhya, Rama comes to know that the public are discussing about Seeta being kept hostage for an year in Lanka and gossiping about the possibilities over there. Deeply disturbed over these gossips, Rama sends Seeta away to forests. She goes to Valmiki Ashramam in forests and delivers twins - Kusha and Lava. The rest of the story is all about how Kusha, Lava and Seeta unite with Rama.

Artists Performance:

Bala Krishna Nandamuri: Bala Krishna deserves a huge applause for accepting this script. Bala Krishna is probably the one of very few actors in current Telugu film industry who can do justice to mythological roles. But the Rama role in this movie is about subtlety and emotions. It needs calmness and measured acting. Bala Krishna has done his role fabulously. Since is story is more about Seeta going to forests and the twins, there is ample footage for these three characters and Bala Krishna obliged it. Bala Krishna portrayed the inner turmoil Lord Rama went through very well. Bala Krishna has always been open for all kinds of scripts and roles. And this is the best film from Bala Krishna after Bhairava Dweepam in mythological genre.

ANR is an asset to the film as Valmiki who helps Seeta and guides her in a critical time. Nayana Tara is perfect as Seeta. She portrayed it gracefully by bringing sanctity to it. She performed fabulously. The total movie is about the characters of Kusha and Lava. Both the kids who performed these two characters along with bala Hanuman. Srikanth has done the role of Lakshmana and this film will be a feather in his cap. He is superb. Sameer has portrayed Bharat and he is nice. Brahmanandam played a story-changing key role. Roja has done the role of Bhudevi (mother of Seeta). KR Vijaya, Balayya, Murali Mohan, Subbaraya Sharma, Sudha, Hema, Sana, Siva Parvathy Jhansi etc did very well in other important roles.

Technical Departments:

The story of the film is based on the classic ‘Lavakusha’. Director Bapu who has done many social films with stories adapted from Ramayana made sure that he got everything right in this movie. Screenplay of the film is very good. The way kids meet their father without knowing that he is their father is a powerful screenplay technique. Bapu has extracted the right kind of performances all the actors. There is a nice humor in the characterizations of Lava, Kusha and bala hanuman. It is very difficult to direct a mythological film of 2 hours 45 minutes duration and Bapu has made sure that the emotions worked. You will sympathize with the characters of LavaKusha and with the ordeal Seeta and Rama going through.

Music by Ilayaraja is excellent. I loved all the songs even before release. All these songs are exceptionally mounted on the screen. Background music is soothing and appropriate. Dialogues by Ramana are good and plain so that the present generation can understand it without any difficulty. Cinematography by Raju is another asset. Four units (EFX, Pixelloid, Makuta and another firm) have worked on the visual effects and they have done a fabulous work. Art direction is excellent. Ravinder has come up with a nice set for Valmiki Ashramam. Costumes and make-up are natural. Editing is fine. One person who should get 100% credit for this movie is Yalamanchali Sai Babu. It is a highly risky proposition to make a film like Sri Ramarajyam. Sai Babu has blindly trusted his team and spent a lot of money come up with a high quality product.

Final Analysis:

First half is good. Second half is emotional. The film really picks up in terms of emotions from the scene where Seeta is left in forest. Bala Krishna and producer Sai Babu should get the huge credit for the risk they have taken. In an era, where the success of a film is measured by punch dialogues, dances, fights and bramhanandam’s comedy, Sri Ramarajyam is a refreshing and a brave film that tells the story as a story. After watching this movie - two people will get enormous respect - Bala Krishna and producer Sai Babu. This film has got music, visuals, emotions and performances in the right proportions. Bapu comes up with an interesting and sensible film in the form of Sri Ramarajyam. Go and watch it!

Story

Chandu (Sidz) and Siri (Shruti) are friends from childhood and they are very close buddies. While Siri is a much planned girl with clarity of thought, Chandu is not interested in studies as he wants to become a rock star. This doesn’t go well with Chandu’s father (Bharani) but he takes it in his stride.

The story takes a turn when Chandu comes across Ritu (Hansika) and falls in love with her. In no time, he manages to win her heart. Meanwhile, Siri gets engaged to Uday (Navadeep).

The story takes a turn when the close bonding between Chandu-Siri begins to cause inconvenience to their respective partners. On the other hand, the elders feel both Chandu and Siri are actually in love but they don’t realize it. Is it really love? Or just close friendship? How the story of their lives takes a turn forms the essence.

Artists Performance:

Siddarth is used to doing such roles but in this film, he is expected to look young so he did his best for that. His performance was natural and scored brownie points in the climax emotional scene.

Shruti Haasan never got such a nice character in her career. A simple girl who is ready to do anything for her friend, she attracts with her performance. The actor in her is seen through this film.

Navadeep is seen with few shades of ‘Arya 2’ character. Even his acting was good.

The weakest link in the cast is Hansika. She has put oodles of weight and lost her cute charm, it may have been better if a new face was there in her place.

Tanikella Bharani was impressive, Ali’s comedy was okay, Raghu Babu came and went, Sana was standard. The others didn’t have much scope.

Highlights:

* Music and songs
* Cinematography
* Siddarth- Shruti performance

Drawbacks:

* One dimensional story
* Lack of comedy

Final Analysis:

Dil Raju’s films are known for technical values so even this film is rich in that. Vibrant colours, mood photography etc make their mark. But the real life for the film is the music and songs.

The dialogues are penned by director and they have been good at places. While he handled all departments well, he could not do the same in script.

But he was good at getting the right emotions at crucial moments effectively. Any film of Dil Raju even if it is a hit misses on thing visibly, that is entertainment.

Due to the one dimension narrative, scope of entertainment was not focused. Even though Ali was there, that didn’t work much. As usual, the film addresses the problem faced by youth but at the end, the emotional feel is more than the entertainment feel.

Due to this, one can expect mixed reactions depending on each person’s personal experiences. If only the entertainment value was added, the film would have been a sure shot treat. Maybe Dil Raju has to rely on the post release publicity for that.

Release Date: 4th Nov 2011

Review

Story

Anjaneya Prasad (Rajendra Prasad) is a self made man and after lot of struggle he becomes successful. He brings up his children with loving attention and family bonding as the strength. His son Bujji (Gopichand) is loved by all.

Bujji is also a man of ideals and believes in essence of marriage as a lifelong commitment. His life takes a turn when he sees Rajeshwari (Taapsee) and in no time they fall in love. Rajeshwari’s mother (Roja) is a politician.

The initial process goes smooth but moments after the marriage takes place, a clash between the traditions of both families leads to major fight. It leads to Bujji and Rajeshwari going for divorce. The misunderstanding widens further due to certain incidents. However, both Bujji and Rajeshwari love each other. Do they unite? What happens to the families? All this forms the rest of the story.

Artists Performance:

Gopichand has come up with a mild and subdued performance and this is not something his fans would like to see but, he did his best to give a matured and balanced act.

It is good to see Rajendra Prasad in a full length role and that too in a very effective manner. Though his role was not etched rightly, he has given a valuable act.

Taapsee is the show stealer. She is sexy, she is energetic and she has carried her role with aplomb. The dubbing she has done was not that perfect but it was natural to an extent.

Shraddha plays the typical sacrificial role and oozes her bit of glamour wherever required. But she has developed ease and confidence in her expressions and body language.

Roja was loud as usual and more than her dialogues, it is her expressions which were apt. Naresh was natural and made his presence felt. The support artistes in the form of Pragati, Raghava, Harshavardhan, Lakshmi Bhargavi, Taapsee’s friend, Gitanjali were there to fill the screen and give the required emotional dose. Venu Madhav was just okay.

Highlights:

* Taapsee and Shraddha Das
* Music
* Songs picturization
* Technical values

Drawbacks:

* Poor screenplay
* Second half
* Extremities of unwanted emotions
* Inconsistent etching of characters
* Predictability
* Lack of depth in crucial scenes

Final Analysis:

Krishna Vamsi is a talented storyteller and a highly regarded technician. So it is natural to have high expectations on his films. Given the fact that this was a film on family bonding, some expected it to be another ‘Murari’. However, there is a chalk and cheese difference between that. The primary reason for the film to suffer is a weak script. Taking cinematic liberties is alright but not to the extent where audience is dumbstruck. Here are few instances which resulted in the audience getting disconnected from the film totally

Drunk Taapsee brought to Gopi’s home and the next day she is considered as a traditional girl and welcomed with open arms. Such things are not common in regular Telugu families.

Chain reaction of slapping between the families of Gopichand and Taapsee. KV tried to bring an intense emotion but it turned out to be a comedy.

Rajendra Prasad being a senior citizen gets all geared up with a knife and rushes to Roja’s home with vengeance. That’s absurd for his image and characterization.

The conversation between Roja and Taapsee in their puja mandiram about sleeping with husbands. That was cheap.

Since it was being essayed as a neat family treat, the dialogues should have been polite, the number of times they got muted goes to show the flavour of raunchiness.

As such, the idea of coming up with the value of marriage, importance of family is all good but there is a way one has to execute it and Krishna Vamsi has failed this time.

At the box office, the film will find it hard to survive. The only consolation is Taapsee, only she can pull in some crowds.

Review

Story

This is a story of three youngsters- Anand (Ajay) is a kind hearted guy who tends to have an element of confusion everytime. Mahesh (Havish) is an aspiring model and he wants to strike it big.

Raja (Prasad) is an aspiring musician and wants to become a big violinist. The trio becomes friends as they work at the same pizza joint. Now, Anand is in love with Archana (Yami) but he never expresses it to her directly. Mahesh has a fight with his girlfriend Madhavi (Sarayu) and he gets chased by a secret admirer.

Raja considers his classmate since school Rani (Remya) as a bad luck for him. The story takes a turn when Anand discovers Archana is in love with someone else, Mahesh gets caught with a gay (Haleem) and Raja ends up marrying Rani. What happens from there forms the rest of the story.

Artists Performance:

Ajay has come up with a decent performance but he could have shown little more energy though his role is sober. Overall, he gave a contained performance.

Havish brought few smiles. He is handsome and has shown confidence with comfortable body language but he needs to work on his dialogue delivery. Of course, it suited him here in this role.

Prasad was a show stealer. More because of his cute looks and for the energy levels he shows. Also, being an actor from Mumbai he has dubbed for his own voice which is appreciated.

Yami was really yummy. She is a perfect package of attractive looks, bubbly energy and good glamour. She was equally good when it came to emotional scenes. She has potential.

Remya is the senior most among the lead cast. She has done her role with finesse and has a cute look. She has a confident appeal in front of the camera and can take up challenging roles.

Sarayu was brief but she has a good sex appeal and is a familiar face to the TV audience. She has expressive eyes and carried her role with ease.

Ravi Babu was there for some entertainment. Haleem was good. Devaa was alright. Sudhakar Raju was matured. Radha Kumari was funny. The others did their bit as required and added value.

Highlights:

Performances from the lead cast
Narration
Comedy
Good pace

Drawbacks:

Anti climax
Logical loopholes in script
Lack of branded actors
Few concepts crossed limits

Final Analysis:

Ravi Babu is one film maker who strongly believes that more than the actors it is the story which is important. Hence, the quality of content in his movies is usually good. Of course, it doesn’t mean he comes up with variety. It is the same formula but packed in a different and entertaining manner. As such, he is a good story teller and at the same time a crafty technician.

Above all, he is aware of how to tap the pulse of the college going audience. And given the low costs that involve his projects, he is obviously a good choice for few producers.

While all this is one side, there comes a point when as a filmmaker he should look at justifying the concept and reason behind his plot. For instance,

The track between Ajay-Yami talks about parents being too broadminded. This would have been convincing if the parents had done that on a compromising note rather than a welcoming note.

There are instances when it is obvious to the audience that the film is made on a shoestring budget. This tends to hamper the production values.

Overall, this is a film which has good entertainment, required masala and enough ingredients to keep the audience engrossed throughout the film. As for the viewers, all genres of them would connect to it easily. Given the budget and cost of making, the film will surely rake in profits and this will be a very successful venture at the box office. But then it is time for the lead cast to come and do the post release promotion.

Review

Story

In the 16th century, a Pallava king Boddhidharma (Suriya) sets on a journey to China. He is endowed with martial arts, art of healing and also the indomitable control over the five elements.

After reaching China, he heals a village of a sickness and due to the locals belief, he sacrifices his life and is buried there. Cut to the present, there is Aravind (Suriya), a circus artiste who comes across Shuba (Shruti) a genetic research student and falls in love with her. However, Shuba gets friendly with Aravind for a reason. Meanwhile, a Chinese named Dong Lee (Johnny Tri) comes to India and his mission is to kill Shuba.

Who is Aravind? Why Shuba wants to be friendly with him? Why Dong Lee comes to kill Shuba? All this forms the rest of the story.

Artists Performance:

Suriya spreads his charm once again and he is all over the film. More than his regular role as Aravind, it was his brief role as Boddhidharma that creates a strong impact.

Shruti Haasan looks naturally beautiful and has a magical glint in her eyes. She has a meaty role and she did justice for that. If she adds few extra pounds she will be very appealing.

Johnny Tri was excellent. His intense eyes and his body language were menacing. Without many dialogues, he conveys the essence of a villain in the right manner.

Dhanya was alright, Guinness Pakru was a little silly, Avinash was apt, Abhinaya was hardly there, Ashwin was alright, Raghavendra came and went. The others didn’t have much to offer.

Highlights:

* Concept of the film
* Suriya’s performance
* Technical and production values

Drawbacks:

* Slow pace
* Weak romance track
* Dragged sequences
* Lack of intensity and emotional depth
* Music

Final Analysis:

Murugadoss has mixed a bit of factual history to modern science in this. For starters, he must be really appreciated for coming up with a bold theme and making an attempt to show the great history and great men of our nation. However, there is a fine line between picking up a good concept and executing it with the right voltage. If it was not for Suriya’s aura and the strong technical values, the film would have been bland.

This movie appears to be the idea of an A grade director executed by a B-grade director. Generally people expect something more sensible from Murugudoss. But that lacked here.

First half is ok but the second half got derailed. Murugudoss made vain attempt to bring grip in narration due to lack of proper research. Even Operation Red idea became silly. The climax is very long with 40 minutes and that itself shows how bad the screenplay is.

It can be said that there is no directorial brilliance as the plot was predictable and all that is required was to fill the two hours plus duration. There is no doubt that this is a rather unique storyline in the recent times but if only it was trimmed in the right manner and some dose of emotion and dramatic values were added to it, the film would have been a success.

At the box office, the openings will be good but audience is advised to step into the theatres without high expectations. Overall, this would not make any positive impact at box office. .

Bottomline: Beautiful thought, bad execution

Review

Story

PJ (Nani) is the careless and carefree young man who is filled with arrogance and ego. The reason for that is his confidence that he would be the heir to Rs 5000 crores property once he becomes a major.

In this process, he ill treats his servants and doesn’t care much about his friends as well. He becomes a major and when PJ feels he is ready to take the property, his grandfather’s (Nagineedu) will states that the property can be given subject to few conditions. First is, PJ should become a graduate and he should live in a hostel with pocket money.

Reluctantly, PJ takes up the condition and there begins a new journey. In this process, he knows the value of friends (Avasarala Srinivas, Tagubothu Ramesh etc), love in the form of Sindhu (Haripriya) and other important elements of humanity. How that happens forms the rest of the story.

Artists Performance:

Nani has come up with a spirited performance and he shows versatility in his body language. There are those occasional scenes wherein he went stiff but overall he did a good job.

Haripriya is highly seductive. Though her role was underplayed, she makes her presence felt with her natural sensuousness. She has good potential which can be extracted.

Bindu Madhavi had a brief role. Apart from one or two songs and filling the screens for few scenes, she didn’t have much to do. But she has that cute look which can be enjoyed onscreen.

Ravu Ramesh was his intense self. His typical dialogue delivery and expressions gives him a strong presence onscreen.

Srinivas Avasarala has given a valuable contribution with his role. His approach towards the role is quite natural and he gels with the flow in a nice way. He is one talent that deserves better opportunities.

M S Narayana was impressive once again, Nagineedu was natural, Sivaprasad was standard, Vennela Kishore brought few smiles, the gang of friends comprising of the lean actor, Tagubothu Ramesh and others gave good quota of smiles.

Highlights:

* First half
* Comedy
* Nativity factor
* Screenplay

Drawbacks:

* Second half
* Overdose of sentiment
* Weak emotional graph in key scenes
* Sluggish pace at few points

Final Analysis:

The film comes across like a journey to the countryside from the word go. The focus is more on the human values and the down to earth nature of those in the smaller places. The feel is quite different owing to the screenplay technique and one can get a flavour of Vamsi movies in some sequences.

Credit must be given to the padding artistes for making the film very energetic with their comedy. There are some good points on the essence of education, values of humanity. The film could have been much stronger if the same momentum and flavour was added to the second part instead of filling it too much melodrama.

Overall, this is a film which has quite a number of reasons to be watched. Just have patience in the second half and you will come out with smiles.

Oosaravelli Movie Review - Don’t Expect a Brand NTR Film!

Movie: Oosaravelli
My Rating: 2.75/5
Banner: Sri Venkateshwara Cine Chitra
Cinematographer: Rasool Ellore
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Producer: BVSN Prasad
Editing: Goutham Raju
Story: Vakkantham Vamshi
Direction: Surender Reddy
Cast: Jr NTR, Tamannah, Shaam, Payal Ghosh, Prakash Raj, Jayaprakash, Raghubabu, MS Narayana etc..
Release Date: 6th Oct 2011

Review

Story

Tony (NTR) is a street-side goon in Mumbai who does anything for money and is currently in Hyderabad.

He comes across Niharika (Tamannah) and falls in love with her. After an initial yes and no, Niharika also falls in love with Tony. Meanwhile, Tony joins the gang of Sarkar (Jayaprakash Reddy) and through a sequence of events he reaches the mafia don Azzu Bhai’s (Prakash Raj) brother.

But he starts killing one by one and this leads to conflict between him and Niharika. However, Tony’s killing mission is all for a reason and it has a long flashback. What is that flashback? How is Niharika involved in that? What are the various traits of Tony? All this forms the rest of the story.

Artists Performance:

NTR Junior comes across with reasonable performance. He underplayed when compared to his natural instincts of histrionics. He was good in dances and delivering few punch dialogues.

Tamannah has come up with a performance driven role. Overall, she did a decent job. The much wanted glamour treat has not worked this time. But still she glowed well in a couple of songs.

Prakash Raj has done this several times. For a change, he arrives only during the second half but as long as he is there, he makes his presence felt.

Payal Ghosh got a meaty role and she made good use of it. Jayaprakash Reddy brought few smiles as Sarkar with his dialogue delivery. Raghu Babu was equally funny as chain Shiva.

Shaam came and went, same with Sayaji Shinde. Rahman was neat. M S Narayana was apt. Murali Sharma was not used to his potential. The other artists just did their bit as required and filled the screen.

Highlights:

* First half
* Etching of NTR’s character

Drawbacks:

* Second half
* Dragged sequences
* Stereotype climax
* Lack of conviction in key scenes
* Avg Music

Final Analysis:

Surender Reddy proved his mettle as an action and entertaining director with ‘Kick’ so the expectations were high on this one.

With the positive pre-release hype that was making rounds, everything looked set. And watching the first half makes you feel that you can expect another super hit. The interval bang raises the expectations.

But things begin to spiral down during the second half. As such, the thought process of the director is understood but he was unable to conceive it with the right punch on the screen. He lost crispness in narrating. Had the scissors worked well on second half, it would become a better film.

There are those fluctuations which are easily seen and one can feel the drag. The good side of the film is the different treatment to the script and giving an elevation to the heroine’s character. But due to the lack of depth in certain scenes, few situations pass off lightly.

For NTR fans, this will be a different treat. Except one or two high octane dialogues, most of his character is about guessing and unpredictability.

If the makers had focused on increasing the comedy track in the second half along with providing a convincing climax fight sequences, the film would have been a lot better.

Bottomline: Don’t Expect a Brand NTR Film!! Not Up To The Mark
